Starting a new business?

To check for the availability of the name for your new corporation or limited liability company, search the Corporate Database at the Web site for the Massachusetts Secretary of State.

You may also check for Trademarks and Service Marks registered with the Secretary of State.

You may obtain a Federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS for your new business. Click on Employer ID Numbers (EINs).

Massachusetts law requires that any person or entity conducting a business under any title or business name other than the real name of the person or entity conducting the business must file a Business Certificate, sometimes known as d/b/a form, with the clerk of the city or town where the business is based.
